Bread from the Field
For honoring what is given by what is taken
Before You Begin
Hold bread. Or grain, or flour—something grown from the earth and transformed. This was alive. Now it feeds.
The Rite
-
Hold the bread. Feel its weight. Know what it cost.
-
Name the cost. Say: Something was cut for this. Something ended so I could eat.
-
Name what you’ve harvested. What has your work yielded? Speak it.
-
Eat. Let the sacrifice become part of you.
-
Save a portion. Return some to the earth, the fire, or the birds. Not everything is yours to keep.
Notes
Lughnasadh is the first harvest. The grain must fall so the bread can rise. Gratitude and grief are braided together in every loaf.
